Throughout our existence, we have created events and adopted them as our Signature Events, these events are usually hosted to raise awareness of our philanthropic efforts but are not limited to just that, we are always seeking other causes that we can possible assist with. Below are a few of the events that you may find in your local community and description to help shed a little light into what we do.
SUGAR FREE BOWL
Sugar-Free Bowl is an annual flag football tournament held to raise awareness for juvenile diabetes, which affects over 150 million people worldwide. All proceeds from the event benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which is striving to find a cure through innovative and targeted research. Inaugurated in the spring of 2001 by the Founding Chapter, Sugar-Free Bowl has now risen to new heights. Sugar Free Bowl has continued to grow ever since, starting with only one chapter which originally fielding 20 teams and awarding $500 in prizes, the tournament is now hosted in three cities in both Texas and Florida; Austin, TX, Waco, TX, and Tampa, FL. In addition, last years Sugar Free Bowl achieved an unprecedented presentation of a $43,000 check to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. This event is one of our premier signature events and we are extremely proud of what it has come to accomplish, raising the awareness of Juvenile Diabetes.
PROJECT COME TOGETHER (PCT)
Delta Epsilon Psi, in conjunction with the Neighborhood Longhorns Program and over 70 student organizations from UT, hosts the largest single day of service at the University of Texas. This year, PCT will be bringing over 4,000 elementary school children from underprivileged Austin communities to campus to get a glimpse of college life and implant in them a desire to pursue a higher education. Along with organizations hosting booths, games, and rides, Project Come Together truly unites all aspects of campus; from the museums, to the tower, to the athletics complex the event unifies volunteers, student groups, athletes, and faculty and staff.
CURE FOR DIABETES WEEK
The Brothers of Delta Epsilon Psi dedicate a week in the Spring Semester, "Cure for Diabetes Week" in order to contribute towards the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (J.D.R.F.). The week usually is started off with a charity party, providing the local students an event that is fun while at the same time donating to a good cause. During the week we have tables set up that provide information about juvenile diabetes, we hand out informational brochures, a tri-fold with various facts, and sugar-free candy. In addition, we sell raffle tickets for gift certificates to local restaurants/businesses; t-shirts withour logo and schedule of events; registration for our charity tournament, and tickets for our banquet. This assist us in raising money so that we can make a contribution in the fight to find a cure for juvenile diabetes.
BONE MARROW DRIVES
With Bone Marrow being one of our national philanthropies, we understand the importance of hosting bone marrow drives at our chapters/colonies nationally. As more than 5,000 people search the National Marrow Donor Program registry, we also understand the need to find a match. There are a lot of key factors that help determine if you can be a match, race and ethnicity are among those key factors, that's why we strongly believe it is important for everyone to enter the registry not only South Asians. Through our bone marrow drives, it allows us an opportunity to raise awareness among south Asians, educate, and assist in possibly finding a match.
Delta Epsilon Psi has established a variety of creative ways to promote the cause. We offer different venues to all those who are interested in being a part of helping find the cure. Who's Got Game is a basketball tournament which benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. This tournament allows Delta Epsilon Psi to bring together students for a common goal, while promoting our philanthropic cause, it also allows to promote the South Asian voice andraises the awareness of Juvenile Diabetes. Events such as this, that allow us to educated, as well as, learn for ourselves, makes us very proud to be a part of. Sugar Spike-Off is a charity volleyball tournament that brings everyone together to enjoy the excitement of beach volleyball while helping support such a noble cause. And remember the good old days of playing dodge ball during your childhood? Well you can relive those memories with the Dodging Diabetes tournament. A tournament hosted to bring everyone involved back to their childhood with this fun and exciting tournament created to support JDRF in a fun and creative manner.
KIDS ON KAMPUS
The brothers of Delta Epsilon Psi understand the need of donating blood on a regular basis, as it can potentially save someone's life. We volunteer and organize an event that provides a location for which people can come donate blood. At our blood drives, each active member has put it upon themselves to actually go through the task of giving blood. This is not only a great way to reach out and help the community, but also allows us to possibly save lives in the process.
